An Education: Things I've learned from twitter Part 1

This is the beginning of a three part series concerning my experience on twitter and the benefits of being on and staying on. Bullet points today of general thoughts and the next post will be concerning #Scriptchat and other good stuff.

1. You can form real lasting friendships with 140 characters as your format and all those who say you can't are either ignorant or just haters. Probably both.

2. Forget watching the news, I realized i check my twitter feed for all the latest updates of things brewing around the globe.

3. You cannot run a successful film and or build an audience without a faithful twitter presence.

4. Twitter is a two way street. You wanna get something out of it, be willing to invest your time, energy and personality and you know, genuinely care about people, their projects and how you can help them succeed.

5. You shouldn't be a screenwriter or filmmaker and not be on twitter. You're cutting your legs out from under you. The bevy of advice, feedback, and all around good times is a steady encouragement to my muse and all its ramblings.

6. The people on twitter are cool. Where else can you carry on a conversation with a producer, photographer, actor, small business owner, screenwriter, and stunt guy all in one false swoop? Film school does not offer this sort of access at all times.

7. Twitter is about giving back. Its a give and take. You make DVDs for me, I send a Mac your way so you can finish coding a nifty pre-production software that will blow minds. You should WANT to give back.

8. Twitter is for people who never want to stop learning. I have an awesome infographic of the History of Science Fiction posted on my wall in my office because some nerd like myself had to share it in his feed. (its AWESOME btw) I've benefited in so many different ways, that being just one of the examples. Be it people like Sheri Candler, Jon Reiss, Edward Burns, Chris Jones, Film Courage Radio, or just any filmmaker/screenwriter I know whose posted something, a helpful link to film budget legal documents, QR code generators, or the newest episode of Script Cops, they're there and they're helping and guiding to greatness. Even if they don't know it :-)

9. Your logline for your screenplay is only short enough when you can post it in one tweet. #Screenwriting and social media working hand and hand, who knew.

10. Twitter has taught me to care more and hate less. Its opened my eyes to how many different cultures operate even within the boundaries of 140 characters and I feel like if you want to learn about the world from the confines of an office, twitter is the way to go.

Seattle or Bust!

A lot has happened in the past few weeks of my life and that of THE SAVING's journey in the film fest world. We screened at Ego Fest in Brainerd, MN organized by the lovely and heavily bearded Phil Holbrook. We're also scheduled to attend and screen at the Lovett School HS Film Festival in Atlanta Georgia next weekend (April 30th) but what's all this about Seattle? Well The Seattle True Independent Film Festival aka STIFF is what's up. THE SAVING was accepted to STIFF last week and I decided a bit on a whim which has now flourished into a grand scale scheme of sorts that it was high time I made it out to the West Coast. And what better opportunity to get out there then the West Coast premiere of my debut short film? Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

Few days later I've already secured a place to crash for the weekend thanks to the generosity of a few awesome friends/family but the plane flight still happens to be up in the air (a terrible pun I know) so that's where this lovely thing called indiegogo comes in. Yeah indiegogo the amazing site that allowed us to raise the budget for THE SAVING's production and get those DVDs out to all our fantastic backers (which are in the process of being finalized and prepped for send off! WOHOOOO!!)

The goal is $500, 20 days to raise it. All to cover round trip plane flight, nifty swag bags, and PR supplies I plan on dragging along to the Festival to plaster the whole of Seattle with Indie Film World Domination. The campaign goes LIVE at 12 AM tonight/tomorrow (or however you say that) and the perks are pretty killer if I say so myself. Really made it a point to use the backer perks as way to not only to include the people who support THE SAVING but in the whole STIFF film festival experience, from the people I meet to the movies I'll be watching. Its all going to be just mind blowing. So. Much. Gorram. WIN.

Stolen from Phil Seneker (@PhilSeneker on twitter) I love this and it basically captures many of my opinions. I wish i had the ability to convey all this in my own words as well as Mr. Jarmusch does but *shrug*, i'm stealing something that speaks directly to my soul.

Bit of an Intro...

I met Devin on twitter many many months ago when I was in the crazy mind set of raising funds for THE SAVING on indiegogo by going on a sleep strike every night. He bailed me out around 2AM with a donation. I haven't forgotten it since. Besides being a very generous guy he's also pretty freaking brilliant. We've had a lot of thoughtful and awfully humorous conversations via twitter and email (hand cannon's ATTACK!) and I've enjoyed reading his blog and getting to know him on a variety of different levels. And yes Stephanie he makes horror movies.

A couple weeks ago Devin and I were discussing the ins and outs of effective production procedures and he decided let me in on a little secret. He's building secret weapon, targeted for the use of indie filmmakers in the pre-production stage all the through post. Indie film world domination much? I asked Devin if he'd be interested in letting everyone else in on his little secret and he kindly agreed to an interview. Prepare to have your mind blown.

And without further ado, Devin Walker: Filmmaker.

1. To start us off, tell us a little about yourself, how did you get into filmmaking? Did you have a career before catching the film bug?

    I got into filmmaking first by being a cinephile. It wasn't until around college that I got the screenwriting bug and then after that the filmmaking flu. Before that I had written a pile of short stories, a novel, and even some bad poetry. My career before all of this (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) was as a software engineer and a developer with a background in Computer Science.

2. You said in our Skype conversation prior to this interview that Hollywood still runs on Excel, what exactly did you mean?

    Spreadsheets are still de rigueur even for many large film projects because what little software there is doesn't cut the mustard. That is mainly due to a disconnect between the companies making the software and the filmmakers using the products.

There aren't a lot of programmers out there that are also versed in the process and understand that making a film is literally thousands of variables all changing at a moment's notice. I've heard many horror stories from filmmakers during the production of their films where someone will try out some software to help their production but ultimately give up after many hours of futile effort and go back to using spreadsheets. That's where the disconnect lies, and honestly it's not hard to see that this is one area that many think cannot be done right.

3. What was your inspiration to create Pre-Producer?

    I had my own troubles during the production of The Cursed back in 2007, too many to mention in one single paragraph. But needless to say, it was the impetus for me asking, "This is the 21st Century, why are we still using donkey carts and buggy whips when these problems were solved so long ago in so many other industries and the military?"

    When I started the initial design it was more about scratching a personal itch. But as I showed the early prototypes to a few other filmmakers their reaction told me that I had hit on something that many people wanted but could never put into words.

4. In 3 sentences summarize what all Pre-Producer can do for the indie filmmaker?

    Pre-Producer can:
        - Analyze, break down, and manage your film project.
        - Organize and manage many of the tasks which are tedious but also difficult such as reports and cast and crew.
        - Also does a realtime pencil budget as you go along to give you a rough idea of how much you will need to shoot your project (which can be imported directly into the Budgeting program).

5. What were some of the challenges you were faced with and are still working through while developing this software?

There were two types of challenges to this. One was social in nature. Early on there was, I want to say, some opposition from certain parties that said flat out to me that what I wanted was impossible.

    The software had to be extremely easy and intuitive to use. Given the sheer amount of information required to run a production of even modest size means you can get lost in a sea of data unless it is well organized.

    Another unique problem posed by a film production is the fact that everything is an interconnected fabric whether you may know it or not. Change one tiny thing and it can have a ripple effect somewhere else.

    I also wanted it to be a central point of communication for cast and crew. That meant having the ability to send SMS texts, e-mails, print, you name it. And this all had to be as intuitive and easy as possible.

    The biggest challenge was developing a scheduling system that took into account all of those real life factors that go into shooting a film, and be able to generate a shooting schedule that is the most optimized for your conditions.

6. How did you overcome these challenges?

    I learned to just ignore the naysayers because I knew I was on the right track. What got me was that these were folks in the same industry as me saying something was impossible, when we're all in the business of making things possible.

    One area that I'm proud of getting right is the ability to import a screenplay and have the software analyze it for breakdowns automatically. The way it reads a script is very close to how a human does it, only much faster. That gives you a solid base of information that is accurate and only takes a few seconds to a minute to do. From there, you can build on that information almost indefinitely.

    Taking care of ripple effects required working along an event-driven architecture that's near realtime where each piece can know when something else changes. As those changes take place the other parts of the software that have to know about it do, and react accordingly.

    Since spreadsheets are one of the most commonly understood designs, many parts of the interface use that same grid style to make it very easy to transition away from the spreadsheet without losing that know-how. It may look like one, but it's definitely not underneath.

    The one edict that I try to adhere to in regards to the information is this: you're never more than 2 clicks away from any piece of information you need about your production.

7. Do you have a time table for its completion?

    Pre-Producer is currently in beta, which means that we believe it's stable enough for others to try out but it's not fully polished. We're looking at about another 2-3 months of work getting feedback from beta testers and incorporating those features into the software as well as fixing any bugs.

By the end of beta we'll be RTM (Release To Market). That means there will be versions available for Windows, OS X, and also mobile devices such as Android and iOS. There's also a few other small applications we want to have available for mobiles that tie seamlessly into Pre-Producer.

8. How much are you looking to sell the software for once the program is perfected?

    The software was intended, first and foremost, for independent filmmakers. I know from my own experiences how tough it can be. Of course studios can use it as well and it can scale to those productions with up to 6 shooting units and 4 cameras.

    To keep it accessible for the indies, it's going to be priced according to a simple subscription model. We haven't settled on a price just yet, but it will be very inexpensive for what it does. If you think about it, you're not doing pre-production constantly throughout the year, unless you're a studio. You wouldn't want to incur a large annual cost for something you use one month out of the year. For studios that want to use it with a large churn in productions, we'll have an enterprise license that lets them use it.

9. How can the we as filmmakers get involved and help out?


Any serious filmmakers that want to try it out and give feedback are welcome to contact us through this blog. Bear in mind that Pre-Producer is running on Windows for the moment, so if you use a Mac only you can use Boot Camp or Parallels to give it a whirl. The functionality will be exactly the same in both versions however, and you'll be able to import a project from one version into the other without any hassles.

10. If Pre-Producer had a mission statement, what would it be?

    Make better films faster and easier.

11. What is at least one piece of advice you can offer a filmmaker newbie?

Don't overlook the pre-production process or give it short shrift. Knowing the business in "show business" is just as important as being an artist.

You've probably heard, THE SAVING is going feature. And yes, its totally INSANE, exciting, challenging, and really really really kinda cool but feel free to ask the next question that pops into your head; WHY?

THE SAVING was a good short. Standing on its own two feet, it was a good short, good characters, good camera work, good acting, good editing, good score. I'm down with good, but I'm even more down with AWESOME. We're going to make THE SAVING feature film, awesome. Its that simple but then again, its not. You know what excites me even more, the challenge, taking characters that rocked out 9:57 seconds and make them work for 60+ minutes. That is nuts. I have no qualms about that. I also have no qualms about my level of experience. I've made one legit short. There, I said it, doesn't exactly bathe me in accolades given out by the filmmaking gods.

People also keep asking, "MJ why don't you do more short films first?"Stop the presses! Guess what, I am :D

Actually working on two right now, "Memory Lane Goes Walking" which I plan on shooting at the end of March and a stylized 80s short in the process of being written called "Burnout" One is a romantic comedy, the other a drama.

I think a few things need clarification as well. THE SAVING feature length version will not be directed by me. The reason? Because I know I'm not mature enough to handle that. I don't even have a problem admitting it. I need more experience on set, working with different people, gaining more understanding about all the facets of the production process before I'm ready to helm something that big. I've brought on the DP/Editor of THE SAVING short Timi Brennan to direct this thing. I have absolute faith in him that he'll rock this storyline the way it deserves. We're going to co-write together.

Now you're probably wondering what my job is going to be. Co-writer, PMD (Producer of Marketing and Distribution) and First AD (Assistant Director). So basically Timi won't be able to sneeze without me knowing :-) Call me a control freak. I know where I need to meddle and where I need to learn. He has leadership skills and an understanding of how things operate, be it the actors or others on set. Things I don't get, not yet. I need to learn from him. While THE SAVING short was basically my crash course on the world of filmmaking, the feature will be my fully submerged intensive course on making awesome stuff happen. I have a vision for the feature. I have since we started hashing out characters for The S. Mattheus Sessions. The trailer for the short said "An film by MJ Slide" which does translate to the feature also but in way a that that's very different from the short. And different is definitely not bad. Like all good projects, this one is now about the essence of collaboration. A meld of two creative beings.

The real question that's burning in the back of my head (and led to many a sleepless night in the past few weeks) is, am I scared? Scared of letting go of the characters, of moving onto another storyline? After wrestling with these issues and leaving a lot of people around me annoyed because I've walked around like a temperamental rain cloud I've concluded, no.

A lot of you don't know this, but for the past week or so Timi and I have been debating back and forth if we should do feature Saving or another feature script in our arsenal. Obviously there are a lot of strings attached to this decision but I got to a point where I sat back, put the ball squarely in his court and said something to the effect of "I'm with you either way. "Epic Saving" or some other story. I'm in the business of making good movies, telling good stories." It was last night that I let go. Don't get me wrong, I made my argument strongly in favor of Epic Saving (you would have too if read the storyline we came up with together) but that wasn't really it for me. I want to make awesome films. Timi and I work well together, in a way that's almost uncanny considering our age gap and different backgrounds. I trust him as an artist. I've read his other stuff. I love his other stuff. I want to work with him again. That's what it came down to. Finding a storyline we can both get behind, pour all our passion and creativity into (and our insanity) and make some epic stuff. To borrow a phrase from filmmaker Gregory Bayne,we're gonna "Go Make Cool Sh**"

I plan on doing a lot of learning during this whole process. About myself, film, people, and just life. Its gonna be hard, probably the hardest thing I'll face in the near future and I don't say that flippantly.

Am I scared of messing up?
Yes.

Will I let that fear stop me from doing the things I love?
Certainly not!

Will I mess up?
Probably.

Will I be able to get over it?
With the help others, most definitely.

Will this grow me as a filmmaker?
You better believe it!

Am I prepared to take all this on? I have a feeling, not really. But isn't that the allure, stepping out into the unknown, surrounded by people who support you and are brilliant artists/creators in their own right, ready to take on something so much bigger then just them. Doing hard stuff.

Making magic, with words, people, and a camera. Impacting lives, changing people. Making a difference. Telling the stories my heart commands me to tell. The stories I WANT to to tell. Loving it all. The pain, the late nights, the misunderstandings, the arguments, the blow ups, the renewed caffeine addiction. I know it's going to sound weird (or maybe it won't, who knows) but I'm looking forward to every part of it, even the messy things. Because that's what filmmaking is. And I'm a filmmaker.

Full Circle

We did it. We actually did it. THE SAVING premiered in front of audience of more then 250 people this past Saturday and I can say it pretty much tops the charts as the coolest most surreal moment of my life!

Everyone got decked out in all their finery and we rocked a two hour event surrounding the release of the film. My mind is still all a bit of a jumble and I can't wait to get a look at the video we recorded of the whole event to really sink my teeth into the emotions and memories that were made that night. Its all still a bit of a joyous blur.

My whole cast and crew, we all worked so hard to get to that moment and since its release so much else is brewing for THE SAVING and my career as a filmmaker it just isn't even funny. It shows that blood sweat, tears, and tons of elbow grease really does pay off. I caught the filmmaking bug a year ago and its only gotten stronger. I'm hooked. The real journey has just begun, and I cannot wait to share it with all of you!

LESSONS LEARNED

1. You can plan a very successful premiere event without being constantly juiced up on caffeine. Is it as much fun? Probably not.

2. True public speaking bravery isn't defined by what you DON'T say, its defined by what you DO.

3. NOTED: Stephanie seems to come with her own built-in fan base. I think its time I set the girl up with a Facebook fan page.

4. Publix makes really really good cake (nom nom nom)

5. A Director is NOTHING without hers/his support system. I couldn't have done anything without my family, friends and crew.

6. Trailers before an indie movie strike people as a big deal. Apparently it makes the whole film screening experience just all the more "legit"

7. The kindness of strangers will never cease to blow my mind.

8. Film is such a powerful medium. It opens doors and hearts that have been locked for so long.

9. Citadel dress uniform jackets are pretty snazzy.

10. I am now a filmmaker and I'll be one till my grave.

There & Back Again - Good bye 2010, Hello 2011!

A blogspot by MJ Slide that has absolutely nothing to do with the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit. Ok maybe not nothing. Both those books were about strenuous and exciting journeys their protagonists embarked on and successfully completed. The year 2010 would be considered such a journey for me as both a creative, be it filmmaking, writing or photography to simply the bare bones of growing up. It's been painful, gut wrenching, exhilarating, confusing, magical, nonsensical, and pretty much the most epic year of my life.

I feel funny typing that because after all I'm only 18. 18 years on this dear earth isn't very long at all, but conversing with a screenwriting friend of mine a couple days ago affirms the idea in my mind that as much as years are counted by those around you, they don't really count. It's an issue of growth and how willing one is to being open to change, getting beyond our boxes because we all known we have them. I may be known as MJ Slide: The Filmmaker, but what about MJ Slide: The Screenwriter, MJ Slide: The Photographer, MJ Slide:The nutty teenage girl who drinks too much coffee, loves passionately, and gets herself into heaps of trouble?

Its not right for me to not cultivate every facet of my personality. I can't stand to read one dimensional characters in books or screenplays even if that character's one dimension may be relatively interesting. Why would I ever wanna be that type of person? I sit here at 2:30 AM in the morning typing away and I realize I'm truly giddy for 2011 to roll around. The prospect of a new year with new challenges burns in my blood. I cannot WAIT to take it on! I have ideas of what it might hold but then again, ideas are so very different from manifold truth. Obviously this blog post should be a balance between reflection and expectation for the future but honestly, I've spent some much time reflecting this year, over both mistakes and triumphs I'm merely going to focus on what comes next.

So what does come next for MJ Slide?

On Monday I begin my final semester of High School (scary thought!) which includes sending out more college applications, getting a job, (and my darn license finally) and that's just my life, what about my work? I've got big plans (of course I have big plans, I'm a dreamer) THE SAVING premiere is still locked for February 5th and then its off to the Festivals for us. While my mind and heart are still very much emotionally entwined with this film I'm looking ahead. Stories brewing in the all the recesses of my mind, romantic comedies, sci-fi period thrillers, and straight up horror films. I'm hoping to bang two shorts this year and start working toward my very first feature length film. While the buzz word phrase for 2010 was "We're Making a Movie Yo" 2011 will be "No Boxes for you!" (yes I watch Seinfeld)

That phrase has so many different implications but the gist is this, I will not put myself in a box, as a person, friend, daughter, lover, enemy, artist, woman, and I refuse to do the same to others. I have so much to learn, I can't let the walls of presumptions or lack of understanding mess things up for me and other people I care about. I won't do it perfectly, I've quite thoroughly stomped on my perfectionist nature (without lowering my high standards.

2011 will be about refining, keeping an open mind, and continuing to test my limits. No wonder I'm stoked about the coming 12 months :D Part of me has all these plans but another part of me bangs on the side of my head and says "Yo MJ, your plans rarely turn out the way you want em to, so WHAT'S THE USE!?" Its true in one sense, I believe there's a stark difference between goals and plans. Either way, I'll embrace spontaneity, questions that don't have answers, and people who are way smarter then I am.

So look out 2011, I'm all in and it's gonna blow even this past year out of the water. No doubt about that.

Dug some BTS footage outa the archives for you guys to take a looksy at. Death should never be taken lightly but you gotta keep things on set chill, esp if you happen to be on a sidewalk, in downtown greenville, with some teenage girl splayed all awkward like 8 stories below a parking garage.

RANDOM FACT: The fake blood was mint flavored but the bottle said "Do Not Ingest." Ok cause that makes sense. :D

TV Interview Yo!

Wed. morning dawned bright and freakishly cold. It might have had something to do with the fact my interview outfit was a dress and ballet flats opposed to the t-shirt, blazer, skinnies and converses like I wanted to wear but ya know, lets not get into that shall we :)

Anyhow, THE SAVING cast and crew were invited onto the set of a local talk show that shoots in the downtown area of Greenville to talk about the film. I can't decide what was more fun, waiting off set creating new gang signs and cracking up at Jack Roeper's fantastic red pants, the interview itself where i was called age 16, 17, and 18 all in like 30 seconds, THE SAVING was mistaken for a play, or the fact that I was sitting with two of my favorite people in the world (Patrick and Stephanie) and we were on TELEVISION chatting up our film! It was all very nutty, and very enjoyable.

We got a chance to hang out and vlog before hand (pardon the random cut off, the battery died) at the exact coffee shop in the exact corner where we held Patrick's audition a good 6 months ago. How time flies.

All and all, more memories were formed, I've decided I'm gonna add producing a TV show to my list of things I will accomplish before bailing out of Greenville and once again it was reaffirmed I work with the most amazing group of people and I am one truly blessed Director.

Lets Talk

These two words seemed to be the theme of the my podcast with the every enjoyable and very talented screenwriter Justin W. Hedges. We sat down Saturday afternoon to chat all things THE SAVING and more importantly THE SAVING's message of Hope for those struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide. The biggest step into raising awareness is simply opening up and allowing for dialogue on the serious subject matter in a non judgmental and compassion manner. Without it, individuals feel totally alone and left in their own darkness, falling prey to their own doubts and lies.

Justin is a real brick, we discussed at length the production process and the mentality I took as a Director to take my leads from characters to people.

Reflections Aren't just for Mirrors

I am my film. There is no way to separate the MJ Slide from The Saving. This film was written, and directed harnessing every part of my being. I'm sure my Crew and Cast can attest to this. Its about as personal as it gets. So many people have poured their hearts and souls into THE SAVING, it literally takes my breath away.

It ain't over till its over. We still need your help. We have 10 days to raise the remaining funds we need to complete this film, have it premiere and get it in the hands of people who need to hear and receive its message of Hope.

Two Thousand, two hundred, and 20 dollars. $2220. No matter how one writes it, it still feels like a daunting sum. I hate talking money, the wishful thinking part of me desires money to grow on trees so all us artists could go greenback picking in our front yards and not worry ourselves and other people with its abundance or lack thereof.

On December 12th when our indiegogo campaign officially wraps I will have plugged this film for a exactly 120 days. Camped out in my office, on twitter, facebook, blogs, vimeo, youtube, the local newspaper, podcasts and now on TV. Since I started this campaign, we've settled into our new house, two of my brothers have gotten married, I turned 18 and I've written four other shorts and almost completed two feature screenplays.

That's a lot of time and I'll confess, I honestly thought my passion for this project would have at some point become diminished or lackluster. I'm thrilled to say, its just the opposite. I am more on fire for this film and its message then I have ever been! I love all that I've learned from the experience of losing sleep, millions of rewrites, networking till my fingers and ears ache, crying over tough decisions I've had to make way beyond what's typical for my age, working with my uber talented crew/cast and waking up every morning knowing if I can complete this movie I have the opportunity to change lives for better. I don't say that flippantly at all, its a HUGE deal.

This past week I've spent a lot of time thinking about the people I've met, the experiences I've been able to have and what still have to look forward to. I'm only 18, I've got my whole life ahead me and I think I've got a pretty good start thanks to the support of my friends and family.

This post might have a bit of a wandering feel about it because, well my mind has wandered back to all the memories and relationships I've formed through this whole process. Everyone needs to take time to reflect, to consider and count their blessings, to sure up confidence for the days to come. I know I'm not alone. I know even if you we don't raise every last penny we desire to that we will still figure out a way to get this film on the big screen come Feb. And I most assuredly know I don't regret a single minute of the past 10 months I've spent working on this film.

Its an investment to be sure, my Crew/Cast knows this, my family definitely knows this and so do THE SAVING indiegogo campaign Backers. To the 67 people who have helped us raise $2,290 toward production and post production costs, THANK YOU! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I can't say it enough or express adequately how much your support means to me and everyone else whose a part of THE SAVING team.

A lot can happen in 10 days. A lot can change. I know three things will remain the same, my love for my family/friends/crew/cast, my passion and drive that is required to rock this film and the truth that filmmaking is what I wanna do with the rest of my life. Come what may.

Pick Ups: Round 3

Well its a wrap. November 14th around 5:30 I officially called the final take for THE SAVING. Its finally done. Every single shot, the whole gorram movie. Myself and the Second Unit Crew, all females (wacky fun!) headed back to the parking garage where we shot a large chunk of the film's main action sequence. It was weird to step back "on set", a lot of memories flooded back and I was once again freshly reminded how much I love filmmaking.

Like the yin and yang bracelet Stephanie gave me for my birthday our two pick up shooting days, Saturday and Sunday couldn't have been more opposite.

Saturday was just straight up mind numbingly stressful. I caught myself thinking "Really MJ, What the heck have you gotten yourself into!?" Definitely not uncommon to the experience of an indie filmmaking, everything that could go wrong went wrong. Tempers flared, feelings were hurt, schedules thrown out the window, shots had to be severally re-thought and loads of damage control Plan Bs put into action. Yet somehow at the end of the day we still got the shots we needed and nobody was dead. I call that a victory. I passed out on my still made bed around 2 am Sunday morning, my closing thoughts were simply prayers for peace and a better tomorrow. My prayers were answered.

Literally I couldn't have asked for a more drastic up swing in productivity and morale. Sunday went off without a hitch. Got on set and our lovely make up and hair supervisor Carice Eastin gave Steph's hair a much needed trim for the sake of continuity ON TOP of a WINDY parking garage. Yes, she is just that awesome. And then we went and filmed. Banged out the shot list, few tweaks here and there, some coaching for the right emotional intensity but besides that things ran like a well oiled machine.It was all a little surreal.

Pick ups, rather fantastic gory death shots, partying old school at my place with my film peeps and closest friends for my 18th birthday. Nov. 14th was a very successful day for me and the cast/crew of THE SAVING. Talking Picks Ups shots, artistic vision, publicity stunts, and why Stephanie should most definitely die in all the films she's cast in. She's really getting way too good at it. I think the best part was she ended up texting between takes while covered in blood. We make our own fun and it amuses me. :D

LESSONS LEARNED

1. Stuff falls out apart. It just does. Learn to pick up the pieces, pull up your bootstraps, lean on those who care about you and put one foot in front of the other. It does get better.

2. I will try my best to retain the tradition of consuming at least a double shot of espresso on set. Cause, you know, I'm all about traditions :D

3. My Crew/Cast have to be some of the most loving caring people a person could find themselves working with. I'm greatly blessed to able to have them be a part of my life.

4. I'm very much indebted to my mother for teaching me great photo composition. Her mentorship is a direct reflection of my shooting style.

5. Anything can be a publicity stunt. Use your blood covered female lead wisely and you might just secure yourself a some new Indiegogo backers. That and its wacky fun.

IN CONCLUSION: Filmmaking. Hell one day. Not so much the next. It flip-flops but I still love it.

More Then just a Movie

My desire from the very get-go of embarking on this journey of writing and directing "THE SAVING" was I sincerely wanted this film to be about more then just two characters and their struggles. I wanted it to step beyond that, to grab the audience by their heads and their hearts, not only making them think but motivating them to act. Film is such a powerful medium and can effect people in a deeply personal way. THE SAVING has already wholly changed my life and I'm pretty sure its safe to say its also changed Stephanie's.

Well...in lesser words, I got my wish. THE SAVING has stepped beyond MJ Slide & Co. and its pretty much the coolest feeling ever. All thanks to the awesome folks over at ReachOut.com. I stumbled upon this website a few months ago right before THE SAVING went into Principle Photography and its been on my radar ever since. Reach Out is a website designed specifically as a safe haven for teens and young adults to find people who understand the tough situations in life they're going through. A place where one can open up and not worry about the judgmental eyes, ears, and mouths of those who wear their ignorance and malice on their sleeves or simply just don't give a flip. One of their central focuses is dealing with heart wrenching rate of teen suicide in this modern day and age. Its more then just a number but the number in itself is staggering. From ages 14-25 the third leading cause of death is suicide.

We must do our part to make a difference and that's exactly what myself and the cast and crew of THE SAVING plan on doing. I decided after much consideration that as a key bonus feature on THE SAVING DVD my team and I are were going to put together a documentary short film companion piece about teen suicide in the United States, covering all the angles. Those who have lost loves ones, considered suicide themselves, survived suicide attempts and those on the forefront, the families, counselors, psychologists and best friends who are fighting back, lighting up the darkness.

Looking back on this whole experience we really did make it as accurate as we possibly could. Both Apryl and Stephanie really poured all of themselves into these Sessions and its seriously paid off. I hope you as the viewers pull as much from these segments as I have, not only from the talent displayed on screen but also a better understanding of who Skye really is and how she operates.

A Review of Robin Hood: The Next Generation

I feel it's important to clarify a few things before I get into the meat of this review. First off, I'm not a theatre person, at all. Simply not my cup of tea. Second, I like comedies even less, with the exception of Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare. Don't get me wrong, I love a good laugh but its gotta be good. None of this halfsy stuff. So when I say I sincerely enjoyed Robin Hood: The Next Generation (RHNG) you can understand the full weight of my meaning.

Now one deserves a bit of insight into the premise.

Things are definitely changing in Sherwood Forest. Sir Robin Hood and Lady Marian have been married for 20 years and their beautiful daughter, Robin, is about to come of age. The Queen has selected the young woman to succeed her to the throne but insists she first must be wed to a man of royal lineage. Being a woman of the next generation, Robin naturally resents being married off so quickly without some romance. So she devises a clever contest in which the best archer and swordsman shall win her hand. Robin convinces her maid to stand in for her while she herself dresses as a man to compete and win the contest to prove her point. And after living her whole life in the forest, winning won't be hard to do!

Meanwhile, the young male contenders have plans of their own. Prince Jared resents being forced into the competition since he, too, wants to marry for love and so convinces his manservant to switch places with him. Other contenders include comic princes Harold and Gerald, poor Prince Rodney the Regrettable, and wimpy Lord Horvath, whose mother (Lady Vendola) has evil plans for usurping the throne.

Needless to say it sounds rather like a Shakespearean comedy does it not and in some senses it plays out (pun intended) similarly to what the Bard could have penned. Much mishap and confusion over switched identities and misunderstood affections. With a healthy dose of modern pop culture references scattered throughout, RHNG succeeds in amusing a wide range of audience members, from young children to adults.

Robin, the lovely leading lady at the helm of this two hour romp in and around the woods of Sherwood Forest is played by none of the other then THE SAVING's female lead Stephanie Ibboston. As her film Director it was refreshing to see Stephanie take the stage with a more lighthearted personality and it also reaffirmed my belief that this girl can play any character she sets her mind to and knock the thing out of the park.

Thankfully Ibboston's stellar portrayal of the head strong yet endearing daughter of England's favorite folk hero was not the only one worth meriting. The rest of the cast very much put their heart and soul into their individual roles and their efforts quite brilliantly shine through. There was a defined feeling of cohesiveness that I find is rather rare for a group of teenagers to achieve. In other words, I was pleasantly surprised.

Taking on the role of the much sought after Prince Jared *insert trumpet sound here* Sean Hackle has the command and presence to handle the character with both charm and wit. And of course all great leads need strong supporting characters and RHNG is no exception to that rule. My hat most justly goes off to the right hand guy and girl of Prince Jared and Lady Robin. Ambrose, Jared's manservant, played by the ever hilarious and very well cast Trevor Catalano and Lady Robin's hand maid Madolyn, played by Laura Scheving cannot help but warm your heart and put a smile on your face.

Now what stage play is complete without a well executed over-the-top female villain that would make the woman who voiced Ursula the Sea Witch grin ear to ear? Oh ya RHNG happens to have one of those too. Roberta Barnes as Lady Vendola pretty much captures the essence of humorous conniving evil personified. Accompanied by the bumbling yet lovable apothecary forced into sorcery, Capers, played by Ginny Treu, they make quite the pair.

Finally rounded out by comedic princely duo Herald and Gerald (Brandon Gaunt & Dean Tierney) this play wins your heart from the opening line.

In summary: Kevin Treu organized his acting troops with masterful hand and cast and crew of Robin Hood: The Next Generation put on one heck of a show! They might have made a theatre fangirl out of me yet. Opening weekend went off without a hitch but crazy crew of the Greer Little Theatre still have next weekend to blow you away, They need you there. Support the arts. Indulge in some laughs. I promise, warm fuzzy feelings will ensue.

Go ahead, buy a ticket. You will not regret it. I didn't. And I bought three.

Families ripped apart, lives shattered by deeds done in darkness.

They wander, so lost in their own fear.
Their own worst enemy. Alone.

Care enough to step out, take a hand, say a prayer, offer comfort?
Be a friend.

They stand on the edge of that bridge, or that knife, or that gun or those pills.

Really, does anybody care?

We Made a Movie Yo! (The Pick Ups Edition)

It was raining cats and dogs and there were old people playing bingo. So went Pick Ups for THE SAVING principle photopgraphy. The theme of the day could be summed up in three words. Rain. Blood. Wootness.

Myself and a skeleton crew tramped out yesterday afternoon to a secluded park to bang out what Steph dubbed "my death awesomeness." After its all said and done, ya it was pretty awesome and really really really surreal. But I kinda getting used to that.

Lesssons Learned

1. MJ really needs to check the weather forecast more often.

2. Everyone should know someone like the Brennen family. Talented Much? Thanks again Memory!

3. 7 people standing out in the falling rain with fake blood galore and some random girl sprawled out on the sidewalk contorted into a very awkward very dead looking position will most assuredly get some eyebrow raises. Much to the amusement of a certain 17 year old Director.

4. Stephanie is quite the trooper. There are few things she won't and hasn't done for this film. Now she can check lying on the freezing cold cement, drenched in rain in 55 degree weather with nothing but a t-shirt and jeans on, covered in blood off her list. Now we just need to set her on fire. I kid Steph...sorta :D

5. Umbrella Man Number 4 needs to be tagged on Facebook ASAP.

6. Sushi. Need I say more?

Lessons Learned

1. One can function on only 3 shots of espresso from 6:30 in the morning till 2:45 in the afternoon. Is it advised? Absolutely not.

2. Never, never, never give up. But if all else fails, bring in a mattress.

3. Indie filmmakers have to be some of the most resourceful people out there. We gotta be, cause heck, we're all broke. :D

4. I really should either get a new pair of shoes I'm totally in love with or get used to going bare foot. (moment of silence for my deceased Mions)

5. Its not the equipment that makes a film. Its those "random" moments when the sun breaks out from behind the clouds, flooding a parking garage rooftop with gorgeous amounts of light and your male and female leads knock your directing socks off with how perfectly they capture their characters and all you can do is stand there with your jaw hanging opened until your DP harshly whispers "Call cut!" Ya, thats what its about. (yes i know that was totally a run-on sentence)

6. Making movies is hard work. Now...when to I get to do it again?

Lessons Learned

1. THE SAVING runs on Dunkin...ok more like Krispy Kreme but you get the idea.

2. Always slate every take (shot). Even if you have to dig through the back of a Hummer to find the dang clapperboard, DO SO! Your editor will love you forever. Unlike mine heehee

3. Situations are only as awkward as you allow them to be. After that, it just gets funny.

4. I finally understand what the phrase "punch drunk" means (slaphappy with exhaustion)

5. To me, when it comes to filmmaking its very hard to over-communicate. If it feels like overkill then you're probably doing your job well.

Cool fruit place...yep yep.

I came, I saw, I jibbed.

Don't ask.

If this isn't DIY I don't know what is.

Lessons Learned

1. Early call times are a divine gift from heaven. So is Coffee.

2. A faithful creative gutsy crew is the back bone of any successful film. Nail them, love em, and treat em right and you've got yourself a prime situation for STELLAR filmmaking. I am one blessed Director.

3. Stephanie knows WAY too much 80's music and I think its safe to say, she's rubbed off on me. Now only if we could remedy my slight lack of respect for established institutions :)

4. I hate trains. I hate miniature trains even more. I hate old train conductors named Murphy. Forget "Pardon me Mr. Train Man."

5. The prize for raddest most hard working PA has to go to my BFF Katie Payne. She worked her rear-end off and I believe my producer Rebecca is pretty much in love with her OCD note taking and faithful slating at the beginning of every take.

6. There are few things more exhilarating then beating the obstacles, accomplishing all your set out to do in 12 hours, and still have your cast and crew grinning like morons. Tired, warm fuzzy feelings most wholeheartedly ensue.

In a land way way down south more 8 months ago a young woman came up with idea that would change the course of her life forever. 9 more days and that idea will exist in more then the realm of her mind. The groundwork has been laid.

Step follows step.

Hope follows courage.

Set your face toward danger.

So begins the stanza of a epic poem written by Gail Carson Levine for her lovely children's book "The Two Princesses of Bamarre". I highly doubt Mrs. Levine would have guessed that some random 17 year old filmmaker in SC would adopt that as her working creedo, but it perfectly summarizes my approach and attitude to the crazy journey I'm on known as THE MAKING OF THE SAVING.

Step Follows Step.

That's how its gotta work. You have to take one day at a time. Be prepared for the next but never overwhelmed. Pull up the bootstraps, lean on those around who care about you no matter what and go for it. Never look back.

Hope follows courage.

I consider independent filmmakers pretty courageous individuals. We don't have money coming out our ears, and the odds are largely stacked against us but yet we're still hopeful...and maybe a bit crazy but you know, in a good way. We hope in the fact that we know we have stories worth telling and that there are people who are out there who want to hear/watch them.

Set your Face toward Danger.

I've realized that very few things in life that are worth having come without some form of suffering. There's nothing safe about making an indie film. Its a risky business, full of long nights, heartache, rejection, and sometimes even failure. You need a tough skin and a strong support system. Face the danger of failure, misunderstanding and hardship straight on.

Set your heart on Victory.

Never let the goal out of sight. Sometimes when the going gets tough I forget why I'm striving so hard in the first place. It seems totally absurd but any artist whose ever worked and worked and worked at something has fallen into this trap. As much as its about the journey, there wouldn't be one if one didn't have a destination. Sitting in that theater, surrounded by those who have labored with me in the good times and bad and watched the titles FADE IN: That is my victory. My heart, my mind, my very being is ready for that moment.

CONCLUSION

Like so many of my friends have said, I should have been born in a epic movie. :)

PRODUCTION UPDATES: Rehearsals, Pitching, & all sorts of a jazz...

August is here and its safe to say, I'm freaking out, both out of excitement and nervousness

The shooting days have been locked. The second weekend in September is our target. Yes, I am very much out of mind.

So lets get you guys all caught up to date....

1. Teaser trailer is officially edited and almost ready to send off to the composer to get the dang thing scored. That whole process was probably one the best learning experiences of my life. From shooting to editing. Talk about trial and error. Mental notes galore, how I'll carry myself on set, interact with the fellow crew members and one of the major highlights was furthering my confidence in coaching actors. I've got a great cast, so willing to take instruction but also own the characters for themselves. Again, I'm straight up spoiled. Once scored the trailer will be viewable on our Indiegogo crowdfunding web page. And for all those who have absolutely no idea what Indiegogo or crowndfunding is, no worries, I'll be blogging about that tomorrow, hopefully I'll be able to cover any questions about how you can help support THE SAVING. ;)

Side Note: I hate money, it makes everything uber complicated. Thank God for a producer whose as amazing as Rebecca is. 3 Cheers for my Steampunk rocking, kicking awesome Producer!

2. Speaking of Indiegogo, I wrapped my pitch video a few days ago. First off, I pretty much hate being on camera, not so much when I'm acting cause heck, you're not supposed to look like you're aware of the camera anyhow but when I gotta stick a Flip Cam on a tripod and talk at people, it just feels weird. Vlogging is one thing, trying to convince people that my film is worth supporting financially is all whole other matter. It takes a special sort of grit and determination. The right amount of openness and tenacity to convey the passion I have for this film and to complete it with every part of me person giving 110%...Lets just say, I'd make a really sucky used car salesman. ;) Basically I went at it with the approach that people wanna see someone genuine. I'm gonna leave the final verdict up to my readers/viewers. Please check out the pitch when its posted. Did I win your hearts? I sure hope so.

3. I'm also pleased to announce that a local artist has joined the production department for THE SAVING. Emily Satterfield is a talented teen artist who is well on her way to making it big and I'm just glad to have the chance to snag her to do some concept art and official marketing material for me film. August 4th.

4. The first rehearsal for THE SAVING took place a little over 2 weeks ago. 4 hours of really hashing out the characters, discussing back stories, working out the kinks in a few really tough lines where perfect delivery is critical and I feel like we're really starting to make some major headway. Stephanie and Patrick are just, well FANTASTIC! They're all in, open to discussing anything and everything about their characters, digging into their heads. Nothing is off limits. They wanna be Skye Mattheus and Paul Connel. Period. It would be an understatement to say I'm merely blessed. We're all pretty new at this so there are very few expectations except for the hefty ones I place on myself.

5. On the topic of acting, in two days my cast and crew are locking ourselves away in a library conference room and undertaking what I'd like to call the ultimate in method improv. For all those who follow me on twitter, and are a friend of mine on Facebook, its the Super Secret Mini Film Shoot I've been going on about. Aptly entitled "The S. Mattheus Sessions" (and if anyone wants to accuse me of being a HUGE Joss Whedon fan girl by all means do so, ITS TRUE) this "Mums the word" collection of therapy sessions will be one of the many awesome incentives that one can receive for supporting THE SAVING through Indiegogo. Let me tell ya, its gonna be EPIC.

6. Yesterday I camped out in Panera from 9 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon. One. Massive. Production. Meeting. Running on green tea mints and pure nerdom Rebecca, Apryl, and I banged away at our pre-production goals, from nailing down the press kits and other marketing tools, editing the VO in the teaser trailer, getting stared out by creepy waiter who somehow knew Apryl's name (For Stephanie "STRANGER DANGER!"), and costume design to delving deep into the psyche and back story that makes for a very complicated but Skye Mattheus. Its these type of meetings, labor intensive and mentally draining though they that really capture for me the essence of what indie filmmaking is all about. Its a collaboration of different minds, ideas, emotions, and talents. Everything and everyone brought together for one goal, to make the best film we could dream of with the resources at hand.

I think that about sums up all I've been up to these past couple weeks. I promise to blog tomorrow about Indiegogo and how that whole thing works.

Off to keep doing the things I love, screenwriting, drinking coffee, nerding out and not thinking about money, Ha.

Tuesday Morning dawned, bright, early and HOT! Ha, who would have thunk it!? *eye roll*

Myself and a skeleton crew headed back to a city park to do pick ups for THE SAVING teaser trailer. INSERTS were the shots of the day. Close Ups galore!

Two hours later we wrapped, with sweat running down our backs, blood on our pants, and a DV tape chocked full of great shots.

Lessons Learned

1. Confidence is infectious. People know when you sure in your position as a Leader and they can smell a fake from miles away. The dogs weren't called out on me. SUCCESS. :D

2. My whole cast and crew do not dig the Nick Cage.

3. I don't think I've ever met a actress so willing to die:

EXT. PARK BRIDGE - DAY

MJ and Stephanie stand at the edge of the bridge, heads craning over the stone lip.

MJ, when are you going to kill me!?

Beat. MJ cocks an eyebrow, dryly amused.

Stephanie suddenly looks sheepish and grins.

I don't know if I should be this excited about it?"

4. FYI if your ever looking for a good laugh, carry an authentic samurai sword strapped to your side around a public park. On second thought, don't but I will say this, its wacky fun!

5. Since we're on the topic of provoking odd looks. When using homemade blood, be prepared for stains, STAINS fa dayz! Props to Apryl for rocking the tupperware container and paint brush dripping with the messy stuff.

6. My Canadian friend is right, us Americans say "Epic" way to much.

7. The world of filmmaking is quite often very surreal.

8. I'm a workaholic and drink too much coffee.

9. Apples are my BANE!

10. There is really nothing better then the feeling that you have grown as artist and collaborator. Sets my heart soaring.

SCREEN RANT: Addressing the State of Things

First off, I've really been brewing and struggling with this for the past couple of days. Some of my readers might have picked up on my occasional rant tweet on twitter this week but I've come to the conclusion this topic definitely needs more then 140 characters to really get to the meat of the issue.

I had two very interesting conversations over the weekend with two young filmmakers, to whom I will leave unnamed. Lets just say, the conversations left me very disheartened. My own personal stance and filmmaking philosophy wasn't shaken by any means, but I was surprised by how much all the hard work, research and relationships I've built online have have paid off. As prideful as this sounds, I don't really know how else to say it, I know my filmmaking. And I'm not sure they do. And if they do, they've straight up put themselves in a box.

The most common theme I heard running through the conversations was "I wanna make big budget action movies, be the next Stephen Spielberg." This simply may be a matter of taste on my part, but I really don't like Spielberg's recent films. He falls into the same category as M. Bay but again, more personal opinion. That wasn't really the problem, the problem for me is this, so many teens who aspire to make films seem to be more in love with what they shoot on and how much money they threw at their film, then the storyline and the characters. It hurts my heart, as weird as that might sound.

So many people assume all they need is a lot of explosions, a couple of hot girls and a whole lotta guns to make it big and in one sense, they're right. Take Iron Man 2 for example, look at my previous list and it pretty much lines up perfectly (except IM2 has a leg up on most films cause it has RDJ but you know...) People accept those films because that's what they're being fed and if a "big brain" movie happens to sneak its way onto the big screen, people are deterred because they have to sit there, watch a movie and actually THINK! SHOCKHORROR!

I know people go to the theater to be entertained, but film is a medium too powerful to just entertain. Its meant to influence, effect and, shape the audience on an individual level. And therein lies the paradoxical balance, to entertain, inform, but most importantly to grab your audience by their cerebrums and force them to THINK, gorramitt!

I've stated where those two young men stand, now its my turn.

I don't care about getting rich from my films.

I don't care about getting famous from my films.

I don't care if you can count the number of deaths and or explosions in one of my films on your right hand.

I most definitely don't care if my female leads looks like Megan Fox (pardon me as I gag)

I will not have my male lead rip off his shirt for no apparent reason or randomly stare at the camera with his big blue eyes.

I will never let my actors get away with leaving their mouth hanging opened for half the frakking film *KStew cough cough*

I don't believe that true love means you gotta have on screen sex.

I think that if your gonna make two characters drink coffee,at least give them real coffee.

IMHO: CGI gore is a cop out. Gore in general is. Absurdly long Steadicam shots do not solve badly constructed scenes. Tell a story, don't just follow the characters around. Killing your main protagonist and then bringing them back to life for a sequel is just stupid. I'm sorry, it is.

Phew. Glad I got that off my chest. ;) I'll end there. Personally I don't really care if anyone actually reads this post or not, it's more of a conscience thing for me.

I've poured out where I stand on paper and published it. People can now hold me accountable for everything I've said. And if you do happen to read this post. Hold me to it. I want you to.

What's in a Name?

Romeo and Juliet might not have thought too highly of names but I have no problem with disagreeing with the star crossed lovers.

It all started from a book I read on Benjamin Franklin. Good ole Franklin formed a society for the intellectual gentleman in Philly called The Junto. Its purpose was to farther creative thinking, philosophy, and the sciences. A group brought together by an common interest. That got me thinking. What better example of a group of people brought together by on a common interest then an independent film?

We're all there with one goal in mind, get the stinken film made and to do it well. That's the thinking behind the Junto part of Junto Ink Films, now onto the ink.

I'm a writer. That's how I started out, writing anything and everything, novels, poems, short stories, articles, recipes, I think you get the picture. And now screenplays. In essence, I bleed Ink. No bones about it. I've always got a pen and paper close at hand (and if not that then my ipod to jot down ideas) My teacher sometimes has to come down hard on me because instead of having Algebra problems filling my school notes books, its random lines from films I'm working on and doodles that coincide with said films. Call me a hopeless nutcase. I'll take it as a compliment. ;)

I think the Film part of the title is a bit self explanatory. So there you have it. Junto Ink Films. The logo for my production company has gone through several phases and I'm happy to announce I've settled on my final design, all thanks to my good friend Paul Reeves.

Paul is a pretty brilliant guy if I say so myself. He creates CGI (yeah How cool is that!?) and he's quite the talented artist. My dream down the road is to make a high concept Science Fiction feature film, my own personal ode to Serenity. If and when that happens, I'm am most definitely hiring Paul to do the model work. Paul is also a actor and filmmaker, I told you he was talented! His latest project Game Boyz is in pre-production right now and I will be closely following the progress of this film. Slight tweaking of the font from the previous version, making it look more inky. I think it really captures the essence of who I am as a filmmaker. I have all these ideas and they all come spilling out at one time or another.

Ok the teaser trailer for the a film but you get the idea. Planning for the shoot started Saturday of last week and didn't let up until well after 12:00 AM this morning but let me tell you, it was totally worth it!

I cannot tell my readers how blessed I am to literally have a flawless shoot. We arrived on location a little before 8 o'clock this morning and wrapped at 2 this afternoon. No hitches and a few very pleasant surprises along the way that have this young filmmaker still grinning like an idiot.

This was my first official film shoot ever in my life and it simply reinforced all the excitement and passion I have for the art form. I called Action and Cut on our very first take and everyone paused in gave me a spirited round of applause. That was an absolutely AMAZING feeling! To be a part of such a intelligent, talented, uber nerdy (wear it like a badge my peeps!) and all around fantastic group of people is quite a privilege and I feel down right spoiled to tell you the truth. I turned to my costume designer, Apryl Snyder, who had worked on another indie film recently and asked "Is it usually this smooth?" She smiled and just shook her head.

TEN LESSONS LEARNED

1. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate...and one more thing DRINK GATORADE...with Electrolytes! heehee :D

2. Don't be afraid of running around in 96 degree weather in multiple layers of clothing with the sun beating down on your head and loads of traffic. Seriously, its a BLAST!

3. Know your limitations and then know how to get past them. If you have your heart set on one location, be open to shooting somewhere else, say a kicking awesome set of railroad tracks that you happen to drive past.

4. Railroad spikes make great paper weights. My desk set up is finally complete.

5. Mions are by far the coolest shoe known to mankind and are therefore my trademark foot wear as a Director. You could totally consider that shameless plugging if the line of shoes were still around.

6. Some people say don't have your friends work on your film. Well my cousin like 15 times removed is terrific as a PA so Oh wise film guru you can stuff that in your pipe and smoke it. lol

7. My Costume Designer is just flat out cool. How she manages to do all she does and still keep a cool head is beyond me. Apryl is my hero. Not to mention she digs anime & M. Knight. Need I say more?!

8. Rebbecca Davis is capable of rocking anything, shooting, working gaffer with one those fold up shiny reflectors, being an encourager, steady hand, sense of humor, all out nerd and terrific teacher, not to mention she she got a pretty great selection of hats.

9. Subway, Eat Fresh! All I'm gonna say for now. ;)

LAST BUT NOT LEAST...

10. Filmmaking in late June is hot, tiring, exhilarating, hilarious, stretching, creative, wacky, and you never quite know what your going to stumble upon. Jealous yet? =D

Introducing!

Patrick Hussion, as Paul Connel, the male lead in my debut short film THE SAVING.

Patrick in his own words:

Not unlike the majority of people who become actors and filmmakers....I simply live for film. With that said, I am still brand, spanking new to the scene. Growing up, all of my energy and focus fell on baseball, football and an unmatched obsession with American History. Interest in acting, screenwriting and the arts in general did not even appear on the radar. That is until the film "Glory" by Ed Zwick appeared on the scene in 1989. The film, which covers the first African-American regiment enlisted in the Civil War, had it all! Historic drama on an epic scale, an emotional score by James Horner and inspiring performances by a cast including Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. I left the theatre that day and decided that I would begin writing the next great Civil War film that very evening.....oh, and buy the soundtrack.

Countless written pages and soundtracks later, films such as this one have continued to run through my blood. I've worked on some documentaries and have had some great opportunities to become familar with the filmmaking process. Late last year, an audition for a small play in Atlanta caught my eye....so I decided to give acting a shot. I can not express in words how much I learned from that experience!! When that production ended, I felt like my right arm had been removed. It was safe to say, that I'd "caught the bug."

So....hear I am! New to the Greenville, SC area, new to the acting world and fortunate enough to be working with a great group of creative artists! Production begins in September......and football is no longer why I look forward to the fall.

I was first introduced to Patrick by his headshot. I'll admit, I was quite taken by it, I don't think anyone will deny that he's a pretty good looking guy, but that wasn't why I was first intrigued, it was his eyes. From the moment I saw the photo, deep within my gut I knew Patrick had to be the one. He has a presence, something so desperately needed for the character of Paul Connel, you look him in the eyes and if he said everything was going to be ok even if the world was crashing down around your ears, you would believe him without a doubt.

I met him formally last Friday and my instinct was instantly brought to life.

Patrick is Paul. Nuff said.

His insight into the character makes me wonder if somehow he secretly got a hold of some of my script notes. His willingness to take instruction makes him a joy to work with and I'm all kinds of stoked to shoot our teaser trailer this Monday.

The journey continues and with Stephanie and Patrick at the acting helm, this gonna be one he** of a ride!

Recap/Sneak Peek!

I'm not going to reveal all my promo photographs from today's shoot but I will say this. One is edited, two are not. Shouldn't be too hard to figure which is what. :)

Lessons Learned

1. Apples have never looked and tasted so good.

2. It is possible to make an decent FX scar out of foundation, clear nail polish, and Kleenex.

3. Don't have just coffee for breakfast if you want a steady hand.

4. Love the people your working with, cause your stuck with em. (btw My cast and crew ROCKS!)

5. Always bring water friendly shoes, you never know when your going to be standing the middle of a creek to get that perfect angle.

In Conclusion: We banged it!

On THE SAVING

The countdown mentally started for me the second I woke up Monday morning. 5 days to pull my act together for the first promo photo shoot ever for THE SAVING.

At least 200 emails and text messages later and I think we're ready to roll. The team is all pulled together. Paul Connel has been cast (more on that tomorrow!), a Costume Designer brought onto the production and I've given myself a pretty decent crash course in Photoshop.

The supplies for tomorrow's shoot just keeps piling up in my closet. Personally I think we're gonna bang it, just hoping the rain holds off.

On REVIEWING

Guess whose getting her Film Warrior On!?

Just finished watching ONE HOUR FANTASY GIRL, I like to let films simmer in my brain for a while before voicing an opinion. I jotted down a list of key thoughts and concepts that popped out of my while watching the movie and I plan on viewing it at least once more before putting anything down on paper.

I will say this, it was definitely worth my time. I allowed myself to emotional invest my heart and mind into the characters and was not let down.

So yes, lots to look forward, still lots to get done!

After a week of voting for my Film Warriors persona it was pretty clear what the general vibe was leaning toward the samurai sword wielding bad a** herself, Naoto, Blade Maiden!

So there it is. Naoto is my new persona. WOOTNESS! ;)

It only seems appropriate as a Film Warrior to take the persona of one who swore to seek the revenge of who so callously slaughtered her family. That's how I feel about mainstream filmmaking. Its murdering the art form, slaughtering any sense of creativity and repackaging the same two dimensional crap...NOW IN 3D!

I apologize for the rant but I look at my new position at the as indie film reviewer for the Film Warriors as an opportunity to shed some light on the Independent film scene. Its not half as shadowy and unapproachable as so many individuals think it is.

I'm overjoyed to the join the team of Warriors already separating the silt from the pure gold that the rare excellent Hollywood films have to offer.

I'm also excited to announce the first film I will be reviewing is ONE HOUR FANTASY GIRL, an indie film created by Writer/Director Edgar Micheal Bravo in partnership with No Restrictions Entertainment.

A synopsis is included below.

Based on a true story of survival, empowerment, and hope...

A compelling coming-of-age drama that is like no other film of its kind. Boldly honest and thought provoking, the film introduces audiences to the world of a twenty-year-old fantasy girl: Becky Lewis (Kelly-Ann Tursi), who escaped an abusive alcoholic mother at the age of 15 and has been surviving on her own in Los Angeles ever since.

Having always struggled for money, Becky becomes business partners with Chi Trang (Paul D. Nguyen), an aspiring musician, who convinces her to work as a fantasy girl who acts out any fantasy a guy wants as long as there is no sex, no nudity, and is 100% legal. She immediately gains two frequent customers, Roger (Jon Morgan Woodward) and Bobby (Joe Luckay), who change her life forever.

Becky finds herself in a web of deceit, betrayal and murder that forces her to give up her own happiness. Ghosts and Dreams: THE SAVING's Origins

I'm pretty sure when I sat down on a whim to write the screenplay that has now become my spring board short film THE SAVING I had no idea what journey I was about to begin.

The inspiration for the film came from one line in one of my all time favorite novels, To Kill A Mockingbird. I'm probably slaughtering what the great southern gentleman Atticus Finch had to say but it went a little like this "there were other ways of making people into ghosts."

That concept struck me as, well very profound and really got the wheels going in my head. The idea of ghosts and the living interacting is not a new concept by any stretch of the imagination but to me it was fresh. Within the context of To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus was not addressing the actual living and dead but, Bo Radley, a character who had been locked away from all else because of his mental state and the things he had done and experienced in his life.

I wanted to take the idea of a individual being locked away, not so much physically but in a prison of their own making, their mind, and expand on it. We can be our worst enemies and most of the time when we sink to such a hopeless state we need someone to reach out and save us from ourselves.

Also I have a slight obsession with the dream world. I guess the reason I find the study of subconscious so enticing is because you never know what its going to spurt out. I believe that people are truest in their dreams. The rawest form of who we are, the way our mind perceives us but it is also so easily corrupted with all those torrential emotions coming into play.

The idea of living and the dead interacting within the dream world struck me as intriguing and I ran with it. Hopefully my inspiration will is apparent both on paper and soon to be on screen.

It is on these concepts that I built the storyline and characters in THE SAVING.

The first draft of the film began with VO (voiceover) from the male protagonist PAUL but I after some helpful feedback from my film mentor Bobby Shook I quickly did away with that. While VO can convey information well enough it rarely lets the audience figure out the characters and plot line for themselves. For me, its better for the audience to develop opinions through the way a character carries themselves and the dialogue that they exchange then simply spelling out all that glorious subtext.

I quickly burned my way through draft one and two and of course started the whole 3.1 , 3.2 .3.3 listing thing. The story just kept getting better! I felt a connection to the characters upon first typing FADE IN: but by the final draft I'm wholly in love with them. They've blossomed from mere two dimensional cutouts of people to characters with multiple layers of personality. In my heart and mind, Skye Mattheus and Paul Connel are as real as I am. Call it being an artsy weird or obsessive writer, whatever your pick but that's how it is.

I owe a lot to Harper Lee. That one piece of dialogue started me on this long journey, not only as a screenwriter and filmmaker but also has a person.

THE SAVING has changed me. My sincere desire is it will also change the people who watch it. That is my Hope. That is my Dream. I will make it more then a Ghost.

Review: Sergeant Zero

I don't like comics. I don't generally read comics. The closest I probably ever got beofore Sergeant Zero was Manga which for you diehard comic bookers is probably an insult but when Anthony (aka @Pulptone on twitter) told me he was writing a comic book series I wanted to do my best to support him. And shoot, the first issue of Sergeant Zero can be bought on a nifty little app for your i/Phone/Pod/Pad as well as the traditional printed format.

Here's a quick summary.

Back from the War, Joe Sinclair struggles to survive in the bowels of Century City coping with near-superhuman memories he doesn’t remember living. Is he losing his mind or is he something more? Forged from a past now lost, his memory used for an inner fire, Sergeant Zero is a soldier few remember and most have forgotten…including himself.

I dropped the money for it and was not disappointed. It was gritty, very well written, wonderfully illustrated, and definitely left me wanting more.

I've already got money set aside of the next couple issues and eagerly look forward to their release.

I was born on a cold January night.... kidding! But I was born in January, and it was cold, you know... just saying. :)

I've been acting since I was 5 or 6. I wanted to get into movie making because through film, actors can tell a story or give a message to an audience that they wouldn't normally be open to.

My audition for the role of Skye in THE SAVING taught me so much about the contrast between film and stage acting. I'm accustomed to stage acting and being on camera is going vastly different but I'm really looking forward to learning the art form and soaking in the whole new experience.

Stephanie and I met only 3 weeks before today and I was first struck with her level of confidence. We're both new to film acting but she walked into the audition room like she was a veteran of the industry.

Besides her confidence, her grasp of the character really floored me. She had studied the script to the fullest extant, digging into the mind of Skye and had picked up on the subtle themes and subtext that can only happen with after multiple readings.

I can confidently say I think Stephanie and I are going to work very well together and I think she can handle emotionally intense role Skye Mattheus. Its gonna be a long haul learning process for the both of us but totally worth it.

My review The Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook.

When one as the opportunity to stumble upon a book that is powerful enough to change the course of their entire life, people take notice. How can they not? Those seem like two very strange sentences to start out a review on a small six inch 320 page book but I couldn't think of anything more appropriate. The following paragraphs are as much a review of the new Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook (GFP), as they are a reflection of how books can drastically alter lives, mine to be more specific.

The Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook written by indie film masterminds, Chris Jones, Andrew Zinnes, and Genevieve Jolliffe is the offspring of their ever popular collection of film guides that include The Guerilla Filmmakers Handbook, (GFH) which happens to be the very first book on filmmaking I have ever bought.

I was 13 and highly impressionable. On a whim I asked for the massive Guerilla Filmmakers Handbook for my 14^th birthday after seeing it on a shelf at my local Barnes & Noble. I silently thank my older brother every day for obliging my request. Long story short, I read the whole thing, all 714 pages of it. I couldn't get enough. The advice, case studies, and open intimate writing style fired up my mind. My dreams of becoming a filmmaker swiftly jumped from the simmering back burner to the main focus of my free time. I was inspired; the passion that Chris and Gen displayed on paper was unavoidably contagious. Basically what I'm saying is simply this; Chris Jones and Genevieve Jolliffe and The Guerilla Filmmakers Handbook are the reason I am, now at 17 years old, in the middle of pre-production for my senior project short film THE SAVING. I used to carry the GFH with me everywhere; it was my guide so when I read on twitter that Chris and Gen had teamed back up for a pocket version of their life changing volume, my nerdy grin spread from ear to ear. I had joined twitter about 3 months before that and it's all a bit of a blur now but somehow I found and followed Chris Jones's account (@livingspiritpix). For me, that was HUGE. My filmmaking hero was only Direct Message away! *still tries not to hyperventilate*

It was only a few weeks ago and I was systematically nerding out tweet style about how excited I was to purchase the Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook when as if like heaven itself had opened and DM'd me a message arrived in my inbox. It was from Mr. Jones and the summary was this "Hey, if you buy the book off my website, I'll sign it and you don't need to worry about shipping." from that point on Chris Jones' hero status was secured forever in my mind's eye. Of course I said yes and the book arrived in the mail, along with a copy of his Oscar short listed film GONE FISHING exactly a week ago. And in exactly a week I have read the whole thing cover to cover. Besides the fact that the book fits quite nicely in pocket of my jacket and doesn't cause my shoulder to ache, it wields the same amount of Oomph the larger version does. Take it from me. I would know. J

From the opening page, signed by Chris, Gen, and Andrew the book envelopes all the bases of Digital Filmmaking in this digital age. I read each page hungrily, the advice is similar to GFH but updated for the current technological advances available to indie filmmakers. Each section is comprised of advice stuffed interviews from individuals active in the indie film scene with a sidebar breakdown of the sections main points to reread on the fly. From Gen's guide to writing with your budget in mind (DO IT, it'll save you loads of time and heartache), camera guru Phillip Bloom's (@PhillipBloom) lowdown to shooting on DSLR to Sheri Candler's (@shericandler) highlights to promoting yourself and your film through social networking and the like (yes getting a twitter is totally worth it.) it's all there. Covering the span that starts with that good idea for a killer film that pops into your head while your staring off into space when you should be concentrating on homework *cough cough* all the way through post production editing and the festival circuit.

The Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook is the ultimate crash course, the Ultimate Guide to Digital Filmmaking, and I recommend it to everyone. BUY THE BLODDY BOOK, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. No matter if your just getting your start or are a veteran of the industry, the Guerilla Filmmakers Pocketbook can serve as a foundation for your film knowledge or a great refresher course.

Rebecca Davis and I met only last month thanks to that glorious 30 day rush called Script Frenzy. She kindly agreed to answer a few questions I had about her journey as a filmmaker and she had some excellent advice for those trying to get work their way to the top in this very tough field of work.

Tell me a little about yourself, what first got u interested in filmmaking?

Rebecca: 1. I first got interested in filmmaking in high school. For the longest time I wanted to be in the FBI(weird right?) and then I woke up one day and just had the realization that I wanted to TELL those stories. So it was a pretty quick decision. Which I guess means it was the right one.

2. So was there a specific person, movie or book that really got u jazzed about the concept of film and making movies yourself?

Rebecca: There have been several throughout the years. Honestly, the first director that I can recall making an impact on me enough to remember his name was Tim Burton. This was back before I had taken film history classes or anything. Before I saw films like Citizen Kane or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (both of these I consider crucial to my film development). Tim Burton really spoke to me, the teenage emo kid who was into weird art.

me: Funny you'd mention Citizen Kane, just finished watching that before our meeting, blow me away, Orson Wells rocks!

Rebecca: Citizen Kane is my all time favorite. I know, its cliché, but there's a reason why it's so many people's favorite.

me: it's one of those films i feel like i could watch over and over again and continue to get stuff out of it

in the book Film Directing Shot by Shot the author Katz pretty much bases loads of his pre production information on what Welles did for that film

Rebecca: Awesome. I haven't picked that book up, but may have to now!

me: it's pretty awesome. I've learned a ton and it's a pretty easy book to follow, according to Chris Jones it's a must have. Just for the heads up I'll probably be quoting him like a ton :)

Rebecca: Now you're gonna make me have to add to my extensive film library, lol!

3. Did you go to film school?

Rebecca: 3. Yes. First I went, while still in high school, to the Fine Arts Center here in Greenville for film. Then I went to Bard College. Which, I guess, I should specify, is not a film school. It's a liberal arts college. And I consider that far more important than a technical film school. Even though my degree was in Film I learned far more than that. And actually, even my film courses focused less on technical skills and more on content within the film. I took one basic two semester long intro to filmmaking class and then from there it was more intellectual. Classes such as history classes about specific eras (my film noir class was one of my favorites), specific genres (documentary, found footage), and even integrated arts classes (Like installation art). I also recently got a degree from Full Sail in entertainment business, just to make myself more rounded and less likely to get played.

me: Wow!

4. So do you think it's important to go to some sort of film "school" or can you learn everything self taught?

Rebecca: Honestly, I don't think it's necessary to go to film school. I think college is a good idea. Higher education is a wonderful thing. It opens you to new ideas and new perspectives. But film school itself? Not necessary. I ended up with just as many music and other credits as film credits at my school. It's great to know how to operate a camera, but what are you going to shoot after that? That's my philosophy. The camera operation/lighting setup/sound stuff is easier to learn

5. While at Bard did you also learn screenwriting or did you teach yourself?

Rebecca: My advisor helped me learn screenwriting, but for the most part, I picked up some books and figured it out. He just would take a look at my scripts afterwards and make sure I was doing it correctly.

6. What was your first ever job "on set"?

Rebecca: Interestingly, 1st AC. It was on a feature that my Fine Arts Center teacher wrote and directed and used all former students to crew. But once I moved to New York I was "demoted" to plain ole PA. Anyone in the "studio system" biz will tell you "you've gotta pay your dues."

me: ah, as i suspected. start at the bottom and work your way up :)

Rebecca: If you wanna be in that system you have to. If you wanna make films in LA or NYC you have to. But I think there are other ways as well

7. From a lot of people ive talked to they say you can pretty much get on a lot of sets just by offering to PA, u might work like a slave but u also learn a lot, would u say thats true?

Rebecca: Definitely. You learn a TON, because you're all over the place, having to get things for different departments, learning how to deal with actors that are full of themselves. But you'll be the first one there every day and the last one to leave and you ALWAYS eat lunch last and have to be back on set first after lunch, lol. You pretty much are a slave. The most intense job I've ever worked. Also the most rewarding, though, because I definitely toughened up because of it. You can't get yelled at that much and not toughen up. You learn how to suck things up and just do what you have to to impress.

8. It's worth the hassle?

Rebecca: I would say so. Even if you plan to do more indie films that go against that system, you learn valuable lessons. Even if you only do one or two.

9. What would u consider a major pitfall that snags most first time filmmakers?

Rebecca: You mean a first time filmmaker making their own project?

me: Yes. As in directing...

Rebecca: Ah well, I'm gonna answer that broadly and then go for specifics

me: ok...

Rebecca: You pretty much have to be ruthless and fearless. On a mental level, self doubt can absolutely crush you. You have to be so confident in your project that you can make others confident in it as well. Don't know if you saw my blog post from this morning or not, but that kind of addresses the mental side of your identity as a filmmaker. Now, as for specific issues...Pre-production can get overwhelming. Do you have locations secured? Do you have talent secured? Have you really allowed for enough shooting days? If you plan to do everything legit, have you asked/paid for all permits necessary? It's important to, as a first time filmmaker, take on a project that you know you can complete otherwise; it might make you frustrated at the whole concept. The hardest things for first time filmmakers are rarely camera related or equipment related, especially nowadays when so many people know how to shoot a video, edit it, and get it on the web.

10. What you say and do to avoid those pitfalls?

Rebecca: Don't be afraid to ask for help. There are people around that know more than you, and there are people around that know more people than you. Knowing people helps you with the location issues for sure. Example: I'm planning a short film shoot for about a month from now and I needed a police precinct. I was certain that I was just going to have to fake it, but the producer that I got to help with the project "knows a guy that knows some guys" and we're probably going to be able to shoot in an actual precinct for no fee.

me: Dang, that's cool!

Rebecca: Yep. talk enough about being a filmmaker and people come out of the woodwork!

me: Sort of like how i met u lol

Rebecca: this area is kind of great for it, because filmmaking is exotic here. You don't have to jump through nearly as many hoops because people are fascinated by it.

me: i know, but everyone automatically assumed ur gonna make loads of money hate to break it to you ppl but indie filmmakers don't really make money

Rebecca: True, we definitely don't make money. but at least i just got the day job i was trying to get. Cool. if you're trying to do it I'm down to help.

11. Do you think you can ever "over plan" in pre-production?

Rebecca: YES. Pre production can turn into brain crack if you're not careful. For more info on brain crack you can check out this link: http://www.zefrank.com/theshow/archives/2006/07/071106.html But essentially...you can preplan and preplan so much that the film in your head becomes the most awesomely amazing thing ever, and it becomes comfortable to feel that way because the idea in your head is so great. At some point, YOU HAVE TO JUST GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND DO IT. If you screw up, it's ok. You'll do better next time. You're probably going to suck your first few times out. It's just a fact. But learn from the experience for next time.

me: very interesting, i really believe that sometimes u just have an idea and u need to just go out and shoot the darn thing, it might suck but you're getting practice for that super planned production

Rebecca: exactly. I'm trying to do a film a day thing, where I shoot something simple every day, edit it, and upload it. All in a couple of hours. Just to keep shooting. Keep the brain going and build the skills.

me: so it's almost like instinct?

Rebecca: yep. and so you don't get afraid to show your stuff too. The way I see it now, and it has taken me a while and years of self-doubt to get there, you don't want to wait to be a filmmaker. You are. Just get out and shoot things and show them. The showing part is very important. That's the only way you're going to get feedback, and you can't be afraid of criticism.

me: don't remember who said but they said that experience is one of the greatest teachers, it's one thing to read it in a text book but a scenario will stick with u better if it's actually yours, not someone else is thats sharing it now

Rebecca: yes. which also comes back to the whole brain crack thing. You read something and you go "dude, I've got this great idea. I could do so much better with my great idea." And you just sit with it like that. If you don't do it, you won't realize that your idea, as it is, is probably a bit crap, but you'll get better. Nobody goes out and hits a home run on the first try. Sorry for the sports metaphor, lol.

me: i forgive u, lol

12. On a low budget indie film what would consider the important member of your crew do have on set whose a pro or at least one with a lot of experience?

Rebecca: 1st AD. Hands down. At least these days. Like I've said before, anybody and everybody can operate a camera now. The 1st AD is the person that keeps everything going. If you don't have a good one, you won't be efficient in your time usage. They are the go-betweens. They make the creative people's visions happen by making the practical side run.

me: hu...maybe ppl think it's your DP but u disagree?

Rebecca: Yep. If I were you, as an indie filmmaker working with a low/no budget, I'd be more willing to DP myself as the director. Have an AC to help you. Then get yourself a good 1st AD. That way you're not fielding the 10 million questions coming at you from talent, Pa's, grip crew, or whoever else you happen to have. You can just focus on the artistic side.

me: well then, that was actually very helpful!

13. Would you list your top 3 best pieces of advice 4 first time directors?

Rebecca: 1. Don't get bogged down in what you don't have at your disposal. Focus on what you do have. This includes equipment, locations, talent available. Be realistic with what you have and adapt it to what you're trying to do.

2. Don't be afraid to talk to people. You need money? Ask your dentist or doctor or somebody else you know who may have some cash they can offer in exchange for a producer credit. You need locations? As around. Post to craigslist. Just stay vocal about what you need.

3. Pre-plan, but don't turn it into brain crack. Use somebody else to bounce your planning ideas off of, and they can help keep you in check with what you haven't planned and what you've over-planned. And for the record, this does not have to be somebody involved in film. Some of my friends who know nothing about the biz have really helped with this.

14. Dream film that you could write direct and shoot if money was a nonissue?

Rebecca: I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy fan. I've written one feature length script that I would LOVE to direct. It's an urban fantasy. Kind of x-men-y. And there's the script I'm writing for Script Frenzy. It's a steampunk space story. Either of those I would love to see actually made. Ideally I'd like to direct them, but I'm willing to sell them too. So, I guess my dream film would be a great sci-fi/fantasy story. I think the genres are poorly represented lots of the time and would like to fix that.

me: couldn't agree w/ you more, i can only think of a half a dozen sci-fi films in the past decade that i truly admire, Serenity being one of them :) Sorry, Joss Whedon fan girl lol

15. What would be the one thing you would want the average person to know about the independent film industry, locally and around the world?

5:26 PM Rebecca: I would like the average person to understand the difference between the independent film industry and the hollywood industry. So many people don't really understand what an independent film is. And then on the other side, there's all the stuff on YouTube, etc. that attacks indie film from the other side of the spectrum. Indie film is not Hollywood, and it is not the crappy videos that comprise 99% of YouTube. It is an entity in and of itself. And the indie film world is where you're going to find the most passionate filmmakers, who make films because they can't think of anything else they'd rather do. And they're willing to be sleep-deprived, starved, and broke to do it.

Indie Hypokrisis

Haha, a big word for a big occasion! Hosted my first real audition today. A small, and very stuffy back room at my local library served as the backdrop as I officially embarked on my casting for THE SAVING. It went pretty well, even without brass brackets to hold my scripts together. ;) (@moviequill will get it lol)

A couple pretty cool things happened.

1. I did my first decent coaching job as a director. I gotta give @burningsuns some props, his advice really came through. Thanks Bobby!

2. Really felt like my vision for my film was coming to life. I got to match up something within the physical realm with the mental picture that had been brewing in my head all these months. Very cool.

3. My BFF KP was there YET again. We both figured she couldn't miss a milestone in my career. Her being by my side was incredibly helpful, especially getting her insight as an actress. Thanks Katie!

4. I felt a sudden flair of confidence. I truly felt like a Director.

I'll have more about the auditions, @livingspiritpix's new book and a web series I'm working on in my spare time (cause you know I have so much of that lol) on my vlog post tomorrow.

It was 2006 and I was 13, (which seems like a ridiculously long time ago) when I decided I wanted to be a filmmaker so being the immature 13 year old that I was I went with it and was like "Heck, I'm gonna write, direct and act in a ten minute short film." without ANY formal training, little book know-how, NOTHING. Needless to say the film I did ended up making is "The one of which we do not speak."

I'll be frank. It was terrible. I know that now, but back then I was on my high horse. "Ha I'm a filmmaker, stuff that in your pipe and smoke it all you loser people out there who like piano or play sports." I fell into every amateur pitfall out there. I used all those fancy transitions that come on the cheap editing programs so my opening scene looked more like a music video then the narrative piece like it was supposed to be. I burned a wickedly cool scar on my right cheek when the metal medallion I was using as prop reacted with the rubber cement I choose on a whim when I had forgotten to buy latex FX adhesive. I still have the scare to prove it. I also managed to almost break my BFF Katie Payne's finger (just a heads up, she'll end up in a lot of my past filmmaking musings) when we were choreographing a pretty lame staff fighting sequence...you know all in a day's work. It was an Epic Fail but looking back 4 years later, I'm ok with that. At least half of me had it right. I wrote a script, got my cast together, and shot the dang thing which is the main basis for indie filmmaking, you do it. Period.

I gave myself only 3 stinken days for Post-Production (I was off my rocker I know) and then I entered the sham of a movie in a local Film Festival and was systematically disqualified because I had used copyrighted music (whoopee, yet another oh so brilliant move on my part). For the next few months I mopped around and seriously considered ditching the idea of filmmaking altogether, maybe it just wasn't my thing...

Through the next couple years I continued to pursue the concept of making movies but only half heartedly and for anyone who's been in the business for like a day they know it's either all or nothing. Maybe that's why I kept coming up with nothing to show for "all my hard work."

I did write a couple feature screenplays (which aren't half bad even as I read over them now) which I planned on directing and producing myself. That should give you a glimpse into my naivety. Tackling a feature in retrospect now seems a like a crazy daunting task, which it is. My journey picks up a few weeks after my 16^th birthday, it was then that I was like "You know what, I'm gonna do this right, start from scratch and work my way to the top." So from that point on I threw all of my preconceptions out the window and started with a clean slate. I know now, after reading how so many greats got their start that my story is really is not all that unusual. That fact gives me hope. If M. Knight was making sucky movies at the same age I was and now has written/directed/produced/ and acted in a few of my favorite films of all time then shoot, I can totally bang this one.

Just to give you guys some reassurance I have come a LONG LONG LONG way (did I mention LONG) from 13 but there's still so much more I need and want to learn. My mom says I'm the type of person who soaks up information on subjects that interest me like a freaking sponge (minus the freaking part, love you mom lol) I'll quote a dear friend of mine from a phone conversation a couple days ago "You so da** determined, you have the knowledge and know how to back it up, there's no way you can't succeed."

All I have to say to that is, "Thanks. That means a lot.... I'm just glad you didn't know me when I was thirteen." :)

A Loving Reminder

I was digging through some old folders for my personal research directed at making Blue is the Color of Tuesday more accurate regarding the emotions that took place during those couple months I'm using in the screenplay and stumbled upon an free form poem one of my older brothers wrote for me when the going was especially tough. Sometimes we get so focused on completing a task, you forget why your pursuing the goal in the first place, it becomes merely that, a goal, but his poem was a poignant reminder of my place, in our household, social circle, and ultimately in history.

I've included it below.

The picture is painted with words. My hand flows.

Down my face my tears fall leaving a salt taste in my mouth.

Echoes answer the questions of life.

Dirt and spit give me sight.

Wisdom wraps my heart in its warm embrace.

The drive home gives me time to remember.

From the past outlines till remain. The touch of first breath renews faith.

Strength is found when you bow with head down. The whispers no longer destroy me.

Built on words of wisdom.

My mind is set on solid ground.

I stand firm as the fires burn around me.

Sister, smile for me. You life will hold a place in history.

Serial 65: The Rough Cut

When I write rough cut, I mean it in the most literal sense. We shot this scene from seven different angles with 2.71 GBs of footage and I've only watched about half of it while editing so I'll probably end up changing my coverage because the framing annoys me, but take a look and see what you think.

Tons of editing still left to do. Need to find some decent music and see if I can improve the sound quality, but from the post below you guys should be able to tell I enjoyed shooting this scene.

Indie Filmmaking, just do it.

Five hour night shoot. One primary service light. One handcam. No external audio. No camera operator. Total time of footage actually used after editing: 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Just me and my BFF Katie Payne and for the sake of not having better words or enough sleep to think of any, We banged it Baby, totally banged it!

It was 10:30 PM yesterday when my long time friend/aspiring film actress KP and I plunged headlong into a dark and slightly nippy night shoot for the opening scene of one my feature films, Serial 65. I finally got to put into practice and try out some of the new techniques I've learned over the past couple months of hitting the film books hard and watching every tutorial and vlog about filmmaking posted on twitter and the like.

The shoot was a new and challenging experience for the both us, space in our location was tight and our crew was very limited, so we took on the roles of Director, DoP, gaffer, script supervisor (curse you hard to achieve continuity!) And oh yeah we acted in the dang thing too. :) I had a wrestling match with our lawn mower to achieve a much needed Medium Long Shot, lost a vital prop, only to find it 20 minutes later, recharged my video camera 3 times after it died and dropped the BattleStar Galactica F-bomb way more then I needed to after whacking my thumb on accident with a hammer. I gotta give Katie some props for sticking with me even after I tried without a whole lot of success to get a decent MS profile shot with both us in it. Needless to say without having a wide angle lens, couple with that fact that Katie is at least 4 inches shorter then I am it didn't work out all that well...but the funny thing is, I don't regret a single minute of that time we spent in my cramped tool shed.

It was crazy, it was long and we had zero caffeine (I know, shockhorror!), but that didn't stop us from yucking up a storm and enjoying all that we managed to accomplish. The highlight of my evening was those few precious moments when I looked over at the LCD screen on my camera and grinned like an idiot because I couldn't help but be proud of the way I had just framed the shot. Its those times that make the long process all worth it. When artist takes a glance at his work and realizes, "Wow, I did that with my own hands and it looks fantastic" Magic, pure magic my friends.

By the time 2:30 in the morning rolled around we were blitzed but still managing to smile below heavy eyelids. As we collapsed on the couch, too exhausted to even think about pulling out the two M. Knight movies I had set aside I'm pretty sure we shared the same thoughts. This is what its all about, indie filmmaking, you just do it. Love it. Lay all you've learned out on the table, shoot the darn thing well, and by golly, it might suck, but you take notes, learn from your mistakes, and the next go around will be even better. Nothing can be a more helpful teacher then experience.

I should be posting the rough cut of the scene either today or tomorrow, along with a pretty hilarious blooper reel and behind the scenes vid(which ended up being longer then the actual filmed scene, go figure)

My journey continues, with last night only being a small step toward my Senior Project and beyond, but every step counts, carrying me ever closer to my goal.

Not half bad for 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Script Frenzy Day 3

Just a quick update. Made some major format changes and added a new opening scene after sleeping on it for a few nights. Realized I was using VO as a crutch, but the new version I feel will really catch the readers/viewers attention.

The baring of souls starts right off the bat and the characters are really starting to become their own, they may be based off real people but they all must develop their own individual voice. Slowly but surely its taking place and it makes me smile.

I officially signed up for Script Frenzy 2010 two days ago. It would be an understatement to say I'm stoked and ready to rumble...or write, take your pick.

I've had this quirky idea for a feature length romantic comedy and its been brewing in the back of my head for a while now. I generally write a lot of of sci-fi...I mean A LOT. I have three feature screenplays all in the science fiction genre so this round of Script Frenzy is going to make for one crazy April. I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something entirely new...sorta...The genre is fresh, but the storyline is very familiar and very personal. Many of the characters and the basic plot line for this film is based off my life, yep...my life and my own little love story.

Yeah I know I'm still only 17, but for any of you who have followed my tweets or taken the time to read a lot of my posts you might know I don't always act my age. In good way. At least I think so. :)

The outline is finished, so are the characters sketches. Now I wait.

Twitter: Get On. Stay On.

Ok so I'm guessing most of you who actively use twitter and trumpet this neat micro-blogging social network as much as I do have been asked that infamous question..."What good is twitter, I mean really!?"

Well I'll sit here for a few minutes and be the Twitter poster child. 4 months ago I was creatively floundering. Stuck in a rut between practicality and dreaming big. I wanted to be a filmmaker, pursue it with all I had...but I really didn't know anyone in the business. Spinning my wheels. Then on a whim, I joined twitter. After doing this my first thoughts were like "Cool, now I can follow the lead singer of Paramore (who has amazing hair btw), Owl City, heck maybe even Joss Whedon might be on..." for some odd reason filmmakers and filmmaking didn't immediately cross my mind. I guess I tweeted enough about movies and filmmaking Danny Lacey started following me and I realized "Whoa, there are like thousands of screenwriters, filmmakers, and all around movie lovers on here, sharing their knowledge with links galore, not to mention some of the just plain funny."

I've gained so much information about the field, made some pretty neat contacts, nerded out over the fact that my ultimate indie film-making hero (Chris Jones) is following me back(You made my day @livingspiritpix!)have the coolest Writer Pimp Angel EVER(@jeannevb YOU ROCK!) and have been featured on a popular writers blog, yeah ALL BECAUSE OF TWITTER.

So word of advice, if you wanna be a successful writer, entrepreneur, comedian, or pretty much anything, creating an account on twitter is totally with it. Build a fan base, people will start learning your name, what you stand for, what makes you tick, and best of all when you put out whatever project your working on, they will notice, which can only work in your favor. Get on Twitter and stay on.

The Subtext of Life

Much of our day to day existence is lived in the gray areas. A world with simply black and white situations would be rather dull don't you think? Wouldn't give us writers much to work with... As my journey into filmmaking continues forward I've come to learn that sometimes it's what is not said that is almost more important then what is said. The audience does not want you to spell everything out for them in minute detail, if that were so; they'd read an instruction manual, not go to the movie theater. Sometimes in my rich fantasy life I wish we all still talked as they did back in Jane Austen's time period. Rarely did one simply blurt out what one was really thinking. It was conveyed with subtle, but very specific words.

An example of the importance of what is not said, rather then what is said would be the recent development of a possible engagement my older brother is preparing for with wonderfully sweet girlfriend. It is a very delicate matter and its rarely spoken of in my household without a thin veil of the mundane interjected... Just this morning, I was sitting on the couch reading a book in our living room and my mother and said brother were standing in the hallway talking not 3 ft away. I was very aware of what was being said (like every good nosy sister would be) and they were very aware of my presence so the conversation went a little like this.

INT. HALLWAY - DAY

Brother

So I drove her home last night and of course I was a little distracted.

Mom

I can see why.

I glance up from Shot by Shot. They both share a knowing smile.

Brother

I kept looking for my keys and finally her dad pointed them out on my belt loop when he got her into the house. What can I say; it took me a little while to calm down.

He grins again, more sheepish this time.

Mom

Are we still going out on Tuesday?

Brother

Yep, I definitely want you there.

I finally decide to drop in my two cents.

Where you guys going on Tuesday?

Mom and brother exchange glances.

Mom

Just out for lunch.

I roll her eyes and go back to my book.

Yeah, sure.

Tuesday hasn't come around yet but when it does you can bet lunch isn't the only thing on the agenda. It's that sort of subtext, the information applied that makes an audience grin, or sigh or even tear up. Get that and you got something going for you. It won't be perfect the first time, but neither is life.

Location! Location! Location!

Location scouting started about a month ago for The Saving and its been an interesting process to say the least. Where I live in upstate SC parks are aplenty and so are train tracks, two main locations for my production. The hardest part is simply narrowing down my choices. Picking the location with decent lighting exposure, proper access, ease of getting equipment in and out, and most importantly a place my DP will actually want to shoot!

3 months ago, I felt like a was spinning my creative wheels. There's only so far one can get reading film books and then winging it from there. I needed some guidance and a little affirmation that filmmaking wasn't a worthless pursuit where very few actually succeed. And Then along came Bobby Shook and Jeremy Clayton(@burningsuns and @happymarmoset on twitter).

It only took one conversation and my whole filmmaking experience took a giant leap forward. They've taught me so much and I wouldn't be where I am now if wasn't for their help and care. So this is a shout out to you two!

Junto Ink?

Good Old Ben Franklin still seems to have a thumb in every facet of American's cultural pie. Or at least in my life he does. Some of you might be wondering what in the world a (the)Junto is? Its an establishment formed by a group of people for the purpose of debating questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs. Sounds like a pretty good basis for a film production company if I say so myself.

I've got a dear friend whose an Art Director over in Stockholm Sweden whose designing my logo at this moment and it should be ready in the next week. How do I "picture" Junto Ink?

You'll just have to wait and find out.

MJ Slide. First blog post as an indie filmmaker. *brief moment of self applause* :)

My filmmaking journey started a little over two years ago. I have been interested in the art of filmmaking since I was 11 or 12, but didn’t really pursue it because so many people told me it was too competitive of a market and I’d end up with not a extra penny to my sorry little name. So goes the starving artist persona. Since then I’ve gotten over the skepticism. I’d rather be broke and happy then stuck doing a decent paying job that I couldn’t stand.

I decided to give film-making a shot (bad pun intended) and made one 10 minute student film to enter into a local competition. I had no idea what I was doing. No idea at all. Needless to say I didn’t place in the competition and for a while I was discouraged but then it struck me, big whoop its one competition, you weren’t very prepared anyhow. So from that day forward I plunged in headfirst and started reading every filmmaking book I could get my hands (Chris Jones, Guerrilla Film-makers Handbook was one of the first) and making stupid spur of the moment practice film over the weekends with friends. For as many times I failed to create a stellar film I learned some new technique, be it how to properly shoot and direct actors.

For a while I struggled on my own until the Filmmaking Gods sent me the mentorship of indie Director/Producer/ Actor Bobby Shook. He’s my hero and got me off the ground and on the right track. At this point in my journey I’m well into pre-production for my debut short film entitled The Saving, a story about a an accountant who happens to share the dreams of the dead. He must try to prevent a young girl from committing suicide to escape the guilt of her mother’s murder. It’s been a long haul and it’s not even close to being done but I’m loving every minute of it.

Will join me on this journey? I can promise you, its gonna be a dozy!
